I feel like a lot of what I share on social media often revolves around motherhood (specifically). It comes natural to me to want to talk and think through what I’m personally walking through in my little world. But today I thought it may be fun to hear from my husband, Matt, about some of the joys and struggles of fatherhood along with any “tips” he may have for those newborn and toddler years.

Me: OK, maybe we should start with birth and your hospital experience (cue all the laughs from moms who may not realize their husbands have opinions on this too). What did you love about it? What are the things you wished you had known going into the birth of our first?

Matt: The excitement that was building for 9 months and all the things we dreamed about were about to come to life. It’s definitely a cap to all the anticipation and waiting. It was super exciting being in the hospital and having our own brand new family unit after she was born – just you, me, and her. Just staring at her perfect little face and seeing how happy you were was pretty awesome. It was overwhelming how quickly your life changes… from husband to husband AND father in a moment.

As far as the things we brought into the hospital… I think we may have gone a little overboard (haha) and only needed about 1/3 of what we actually brought. I think I mostly remember just trying to do my best to lighten the mood, be a support, and be attentive to what you needed.

Me: Let’s talk about those early months of fatherhood. How was it for you? What are the things that made you feel supportive to me as a new mom? What are things you felt you could take ownership of?

Matt: In the early days there is a lot of uncertainty sometimes… wondering if things are normal or not normal and there was some concern there. I remember the lack of sleep was an adjustment for us both and figuring out our new routine with her. There is a lot of giving of yourself and a need to look at it as a beautiful thing. Some things I practically remember doing was helping to clean bottles, being present so you didn’t feel alone with nursing, taking her in the morning so you could sleep in, taking ownership of bath time and often rocking our babies to sleep after you fed them. I also know that the “witching hour” was a very real and taxing thing for you after a long day with our babies so letting you have some time to yourself to give a reprieve from the day was a way I could practically support you.

Me: What would you say was the hardest part of fatherhood in the first few years? The sleepless nights? Toddler tantrums? How did you find joy throughout the hard times?

Matt: The hardest part for me was coming to grips with the fact that you are a father and although we all have an innate selfishness and desire to do what we want with our time… it all changes when you have a baby. The faster I embraced that change the more joy I experienced with my child. If your thinking is consumed with what you could be doing with your time instead of just enjoying your child in the moment, you may miss out on the amazing events as your child grows. Embracing it changes the outlook on the whole thing.

Me: Let’s talk about discipline and guidance a bit. Often times mothers and fathers have a hard time coming together on their viewpoints or struggle to parent cohesively with one another. What do you think helped us “get on the same page” with our parenting style.

Matt: I think we both came from different upbringings but had similar foundational faith beliefs which made it easier to find a common ground. For us it was a gospel style of parenting that we both wanted to lean into. We might have differed on specific techniques… but through reading/searching and communicating we found more common ground and could always circle back to that. Talking through everything and knowing we both were wanting to honor God through the way we raise our children was very helpful. Also extending grace and understanding we may start out in different places but if we searched for the common ground and ultimately what was best for our child specifically we could always get to a good place. We both wanted to instill in our kids a desire to love God… not just eliminate a behavior through discipline.

Me: So we all know moms love sharing baby product ideas that help them through the early years or make things easier/helpful. What are your favorite things other dads may want to know about or that you wished you had?

Matt: Hmmm…. good swaddles and knowing how to swaddle a baby was pretty key for us, the Happiest Baby on the Block book by was a game changer with our colicky babies (especially the first), the Owlet and Newton was awesome for peace of mind, and a stroller that was easy to use/fold/transport but felt quality.

I have recently been asked quite a bit about how Matt and I planned our wedding in such a short 4 (and a half) months and what advice I would give to those engaged. Even though I could chat for hours about this or that wedding trend idea, I am always compelled to speak a little deeper about how we “prepared” for marriage. A part of me feels a little silly for writing about any topic of marriage (being a newbie and all) and especially because there is so much more we have to figure out in the days ahead. Our marriage is a work in progress but we had learned so much during our engagment that I thought it’d be fun to share a few of our experiences.

One truth I learned is that it’s not about that one special day but about your life after it. And while every bride knows that, I think it can be hard to stay focused on what you are preparing for during those months of dress shopping, venue searching, bachelorette celebrating, and yes even photographer finding. It was for me anyways. However, even though Matt and I had a short period of time to get the details of our day together, we tried our best to really discuss and plan for our life after the day would come and go. After all, we had a lot of changes happening for us.

Here is a brief list of some of the planning we did:

We dug deep into our finances and set up a budget prior to saying “I do”. Having a budget sounds so restrictive but in reality it gives us freedom with our finances that we really need.

We were counseled (and counseled again). We had the opportunity to do pre-marital counseling with our local pastor who married us. We also did outside counseling that dug even further into the dynamic of our relationship. Both were super helpful to get us talking.

We learned from others. Prior to our engagement we came across the Real Marriage series by Mark Driscoll. Over the course of our engagement we would listen and/or watch his messages. We loved how open he and his wife were about their marriage.

We read. Well, I must admit… Matt read a lot more than me. The books we liked: Love & Respect by Emerson Eggerichs, Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey, and yes even a few books on intimacy.

We communicated and were brutally honest with each other. It was hard at first but eventually we weren’t afraid to chat about our concerns, desires, & hopes for our future life together. For those of us that knew us when we first met, it was obvious we had a lot to work thru and communicate about.

If you are engaged, do you feel like you know what your life will look like after you tie the knot? It gave me such a peace to know how we were going to do life after the honeymoon and each of the things above has made the transition into marriage run more smoothly than I thought for us. By no means do we have it all together (at ALL), but I do believe we have really settled into life as husband and wife in such an amazing way. We are only two months in- but we love the journey so far.

…the best man I know: my husband and very best friend.

I am so excited to let you all know that Matt will be working alongside me at each wedding I photograph going forward. It all started in early 2012 when I needed a few headshots for my new website launch. I figured I’d just set up my camera settings and have someone snap some shots for me. Matt had agreed to do it and while he has been supportive from day one, I was quite surprised he was interested in taking the photos. It was fun to show him how the shutter speed and aperture work and couldn’t believe how well he picked it all up. From there he started joining me for some shoots where he could learn even further in a no pressure situation. And honestly, I was impressed. Aside from his ability to work it with the camera and clients, there is just a peace I have knowing he is by my side. He makes me better at what I do.

So…here’s to you babe! Who thought that when you bought me those photography classes 2 years ago that you would be joining me in this journey in such a tangible way?!

XO

My mom is the host of all party hosts. She’s the type of woman that can whip up an enormous amount of food and have everything perfectly put together even after a long day of work. From the time I can remember, my mother was always bringing people into our home to LOVE them and well, feed them too! She made cooking a gourmet meal look easy. Her friends never understood how she could do it, and as daughters we grew to want to be like that too. Obviously, we failed… multiple times and would wonder “how DOES she do it?” After 26 years, I still haven’t found the answer, but I do know that God has given her the amazing gift of hospitality. So on Mother’s Day, my sisters and I decided to make her a guest at her own party… to host her in a way that she deserved. We prepped (oh did we prep!), and got a little crafty too. Take a look at the photos below of the fun we had to celebrate the amazing woman she is:
